The Kingswood Partnership Engineering Challenge 2011

The Kingswood Partnership Engineering Challenge 2011 was hotly contested with 20 teams of Key Stage 4 Engineering students from the Partnership’s schools competing for the trophy at the University of The West of England’s Sports Hall Raceway. Following the success of last year’s inaugural championship the students organised themselves into teams and designed and tested gas powered dragsters before converging at the university on the morning of the 29th of June to enact the Partnership’s version of a Santa Pod race meeting.

The staff organising the event were pleased with the students’ impeccable behaviour and the way in which the whole event was entered into with good spirit and a determination to compete and win. The teams progressed through a series of eliminators and last year’s winners, Downend, narrowly missed inclusion in the final 8. Finally, teams from The Sir Bernard Lovell School and Mangotsfield School were left to battle it out for the top honours.

The victors’ spoils went to The Sir Bernard Lovell School with a Mangotsfield team securing second place and another team from The Sir Bernard Lovell School taking third place. Prizes of engineering tools were awarded to the three highest placed teams, with the winners collecting digital callipers along with the overall trophy.

Thanks to the Engineering teachers from The Sir Bernard Lovell, Mangotsfield and Downend Schools for their help and support, the University of The West of England for subsidising the venue and The Kingswood Partnership for the transport, prizes and fuel cells.
